Career options

Firstly, it is important to establish what your child is interested in doing in the future. Studying in an Ivy league school in the US or Oxbridge in the UK will more likely provide an edge in being hired by well-known Multi-national Companies (MNCs), since they have been known to recruit directly from the campuses of top schools.

However, it is a myth that local graduates are less well perceived by employers than their foreign counterparts. A survey conducted by the Straits Times showed that three out of four public-listed companies indicated no preference with regard to employing local or overseas graduates, with the rest preferring candidates who studied in Singapore. Thus a local education does not stifle career opportunities as much as many may think. The effect of brand name is more pronounced in general degrees in the Arts and Social Sciences, whereas our universities are just as professional in providing specialized degrees such as Medicine, Law and Dentistry. Furthermore, your child should be focusing on performing well in his or her chosen university, rather than worrying about the prestige of the university.
